Welcome to the website of Casus Omissus, a law clinic operating in partnership with the School of Law at the University of Aberdeen.
Casus Omissus, or ‘The Aberdeen Law Project’ as we are publicly known, is the first law clinic in Scotland to be founded, operated and led by students. We primarily exist in order to provide assistance to those that would otherwise be unable to seek or defend legal adjudication. Our motivation in providing this service to the people of the North East of Scotland is simply to provide legal recourse where there would otherwise be none. We exist to supplement, not replace, existing services.
Our clinic is not a charity and should not be viewed as such. The services we provide are free, but they are not without benefit to the provider. We recognise and celebrate the merit of pro bono: that all those involved in the provision of a law clinic can benefit - the client benefits from receiving advice that they otherwise would have been unable to obtain, the student benefits from receiving exposure to ‘real life’ legal problems, and the wider legal profession benefits from a more accomplished standard of intrant. The Aberdeen Law Project is consequently a universally beneficial venture which increases access to justice by providing recourse that would otherwise be unavailable.
The provision of a law clinic is not something that we, as students, could provide without assistance. We are grateful to our management board for overseeing our strategic objectives and assessing our performance; our supervisors for directing our endeavours and ensuring the accuracy of our advice; our sponsors for providing us with the financial support required to operate; and our clients for trusting us with their problems. Each of you is central to our continued operation and success – thank you.
Please do get in touch with us if you think that we may be able to help you or your cause. Our contact information is available on the ‘contact us’ page.
Best wishes,
Ryan Whelan
